There are far more items to deal with in buildings such as

the New Law Courts or New Government offices than in any Dock

however great the capacity.

Apart from the above, every month it is necessary to measure

up and prepare separate accounts each containing many items for

work done during the month in order that payment may be made.

This is never done in eny private office and I doubt whether it

is adopted in any unicpal office, however, this is the custom

required by the Government and this alone is sufficient to keep

one man well employed for many days during the month.

I do not ask for any Surveyor but it is in the interest

of the Government to give me sufficient assistance to enable me

to carry out all works in a satisfactory and business like way.

I am aware that retrenchment is the order of the day and

with this in view I would suggest that Ir. Longstaff be given

a post inside the office and another First class overseer be ap-

pointed for the New Government offices.

Ir. Longstaff has proved himself to be a good and reliable

Assistant, he has from time to time assisted me with many matters

inside the office, if this course were adopted the office would

be more economically run than prior to the date when one Assist-

ant Engineer was transferred to the Building Ordinance office

and the work generally could be carried out in quite as satis-

factory a manner as before the transfer.

In the event of the Government deciding not to promote Kr.

Longstaff I must ask for another fully qualified Architectural

Assistant with a good knowledge of quantities.

The Hon.. Chatham C.K.G.

I have the honour to be

Sir, Yours obediently,

(sd.) H. G. Fisher.
